What this assumes:
  • We use the payout rate exactly as entered, the whole way through — this doesn't guess whether that rate goes up, goes down, or the fund's price changes over time.
  • The default rate above is pulled from our own periodically-updated notes on HDIV.TO, not live market data — always fine to adjust it yourself.

The green line is your balance — how big the whole position has grown. The yellow line is the running total of cash payouts you've actually received. On this chart, watch the yellow line more than the green one — since HDIV.TO is an income fund, generating steady cash payouts is its main job, so that line should climb steadily.

What is HDIV.TO?

Hamilton Enhanced Canadian Covered Call ETF, launched August 6, 2021.

HDIV.TO — Hamilton Enhanced Canadian Covered Call ETF

HDIV is an income fund, not a growth fund — the whole point is the monthly payout, not share price appreciation, so judge it on yield and sustainability rather than expecting big price gains.

Instead of picking stocks itself, HDIV buys a bundle of other Hamilton funds, each one focused on a different slice of the Canadian market — banks, energy, tech, gold miners, utilities. Each of those funds boosts its monthly payout by selling something called "covered calls," which basically means giving up some of the upside if a stock jumps a lot, in exchange for extra cash every month. On top of that whole bundle, HDIV borrows a bit more money — about 25 cents for every dollar you put in — to try to push the payout even higher.

On fees: Hamilton doesn't charge its own fee on HDIV itself, but you're still paying the fees of every fund it holds underneath, so it isn't actually free — worth knowing that going in rather than assuming "0% fee" means no cost at all.

It pays monthly and currently works out to just under a 10% yield. Since its July 2021 inception it's averaged close to 19% a year on a total-return basis — but that average hides a bumpy ride, and it's a young enough fund (about five years of history) that the average shouldn't be read as a settled long-term pattern. It's had a strong run lately, up over 40% in the past year, and the borrowed money that helped returns on the way up works the same way in reverse if things turn down.

Risk: Medium risk

What's the actual risk rating?

Hamilton's own paperwork rates HDIV "Medium" — the standardized number regulators require on every fund's official fact sheet. That number is worth taking with a grain of salt here. The professional analysts who actually track this fund day to day talk about it more cautiously: the most recent rating found (February 2026) called it outright "risky," and the general advice from people who follow it is that it belongs as a small slice of a portfolio, not something to lean on heavily — a few specifically said they'd steer older or more conservative investors away from anything using this much borrowed money. Part of the concern: more than half of what it's paid out has reportedly come from capital gains and return of capital rather than straightforward investment income, which raises real questions about how steady that monthly number would stay if markets turned rough.

Plain-English bottom line: The official label is "Medium." The analysts who track it professionally describe it more like "higher risk, small slice of a portfolio." Both are worth knowing.

Price trend: Growing

A high yield alone doesn't say whether a fund's price is holding up or quietly being eaten away to help fund the payout — this looks at that separately, using the fund's real price history, not a prediction. Declining doesn't mean the fund is a bad choice; some funds are built to pay out more than they grow, on purpose. It just means part of what you're receiving may be a return of your own money rather than new income.

Est. +9.3%/yr price growth since inception (SI total return 19.3%/yr annualized over ~5.0 yrs since Jul 2021 vs. current yield ~9.99%)
