Project how a XDIV.TO position could grow through monthly distributions and reinvestment. Already pre-loaded with XDIV.TO's current distribution rate and a sample $10,000 balance — edit the numbers below with your own.
$52,696.74 after 10 years
Monthly income by then: $136.66/mo
The green line is your balance — how big the whole position has grown. The yellow line is the running total of cash payouts you've actually received. On this chart, expect both lines to climb — since XDIV.TO is a growth & income blend, part of its story is rising cash payouts (yellow), part is the balance itself growing (green).

iShares Core MSCI Canadian Quality Dividend Index ETF, launched June 1, 2017.
XDIV.TO — iShares Core MSCI Canadian Quality Dividend Index ETF
XDIV is a straightforward, no-frills Canadian dividend fund — no covered calls, no borrowed money. It just holds a tight basket of 21 Canadian companies picked for two things at once: a reliably high dividend, and "quality" — meaning solid balance sheets, steady earnings, and a decent return on equity, not just whoever happens to be paying the biggest yield this year. That quality screen is really the whole pitch: it's meant to avoid companies that pay a big dividend today but might be at risk of cutting it.
With only 21 holdings, it's more concentrated than it might sound — the top 10 make up about 75% of the fund. It leans heavily into financials (banks and insurers, roughly 46-47%) and energy (roughly 29%), with smaller slices in utilities and consumer names like Restaurant Brands. So while it's picking for "quality," it's still very much a bet on Canadian banks and energy doing reasonably well.
On fees: the MER is 0.11% — genuinely one of the cheapest dividend ETFs available in Canada.
It pays monthly, currently around $0.12/unit, working out to a yield in the low-3% range at today's price (around $45.50-46). That's on the lower end for a dividend-focused fund, which fits the strategy: XDIV isn't trying to maximize the payout, it's trying to hold companies where the dividend is safe and likely to grow. Performance has been strong over the past several years (up around 28% in 2025, roughly 49% over the past year), but that's followed a very good run for Canadian financials and energy — and its own official numbers show it isn't immune to drawdowns: it dropped in 2 of the last 8 calendar years, and its worst 3-month stretch (ending April 2020, the COVID crash) saw a $1,000 investment fall to $782. Since launching in June 2017, it's compounded at about 13.6% a year — a solid stretch, though under 9 years is still a fairly short history to lean on heavily.

What's the actual risk rating?
BlackRock's own ETF Facts document rates XDIV "Medium" risk — the standard volatility-based label. That roughly matches how it's actually followed: analysts tracked on Stockchase have leaned clearly positive (5 buy calls to 1 sell over the past year), generally praising the fund's low cost and quality/defensive tilt. The main caution raised isn't really about the fund's structure — it's about timing and concentration: a few analysts have flagged that the Canadian market looks fully priced right now, and that XDIV's roughly 50% weighting in financials means it'll rise and fall with how Canadian banks are doing more than a fully diversified fund would. No leverage, no capped upside, so there's no hidden structural risk the official rating is missing — the honest read is that "Medium" is a fair label, and the real risk to watch is sector concentration, not anything under the hood.
Plain-English bottom line: A low-cost, quality-screened dividend fund with a genuinely defensive tilt — the "Medium" rating and analyst sentiment agree here, with the main thing to watch being its roughly 50% weighting in financials.
A high yield alone doesn't say whether a fund's price is holding up or quietly being eaten away to help fund the payout — this looks at that separately, using the fund's real price history, not a prediction. Declining doesn't mean the fund is a bad choice; some funds are built to pay out more than they grow, on purpose. It just means part of what you're receiving may be a return of your own money rather than new income.
Est. +11.5%/yr price growth since inception (SI total return 14.57%/yr annualized over ~9.1 yrs since Jun 2017 vs. current yield ~3.09%)
