XEQT.TO is a Growth fund — most of its real return has historically come from price appreciation, not distributions. A fund like this can make a lot of sense with a long runway ahead of you — say, 30 years — to let that growth compound before you need the money. If you're closer to needing income now, an income-focused fund is usually a closer match to what DripToFreedom is built around.

What this assumes:
  • We use the payout rate exactly as entered, the whole way through — this doesn't guess whether that rate goes up, goes down, or the fund's price changes over time.
  • The default rate above is pulled from our own periodically-updated notes on XEQT.TO, not live market data — always fine to adjust it yourself.

Your growth over time

The green line is your balance — how big the whole position has grown. The yellow line is the running total of cash payouts you've actually received. On this chart, watch the green line more than the yellow one — since XEQT.TO is a growth fund, most of its real growth should show up as a rising balance, not rising cash payouts.

What is XEQT.TO?

iShares Core Equity ETF Portfolio, launched August 17, 2019.

XEQT.TO — iShares Core Equity ETF Portfolio

XEQT is a growth fund, not an income fund — it's built for long-term share price growth, not a payout, so a small dividend here isn't a shortcoming, it's the design working as intended.

It's about as simple as investing gets while still being genuinely diversified: one purchase gives you a small piece of roughly 8,500 companies spread across the US, Canada, international developed markets, and emerging markets. Under the hood it's actually five other iShares funds bundled together, split roughly 43% US, 26% Canadian, 25% international, and 5% emerging markets — and it rebalances itself automatically, so you're not the one deciding when to shift money between regions. There's no options-selling, no borrowed money, no attempt to boost the payout artificially — it just owns companies and holds them.

On fees: the total cost works out to about 0.20% a year, genuinely low for something this diversified — roughly $20 a year for every $10,000 invested.

It pays a small dividend, generally landing somewhere around 1.5–2% depending on when you check — low compared to the income-focused funds elsewhere on this site, and that's expected, not a flaw.

Since its August 2019 inception, XEQT has averaged around 14% a year — but that average smooths over a genuinely bumpy ride: 2022 was down almost 11%, while 2024 and 2025 were both up over 20%. It's had a strong recent stretch too, up roughly 26% over the past year, which reflects a broadly strong run for global markets rather than anything specific to this fund's strategy.

Risk: Lower risk

What's the actual risk rating?

iShares rates XEQT "Low to Medium" on its official fund facts — and unlike some of the higher-yield funds on this site, that label roughly matches how people who actually watch it talk about it. Analyst coverage has leaned consistently positive (recent tracked ratings ran four buys, zero sells), and the common framing is "set it and forget it" — a core, long-term holding suited to someone with a long time horizon who can sit through the ups and downs. Worth being clear on one thing the "Low to Medium" label can undersell: this is 100% equities, with zero bonds or cash cushioning it, so it will still drop meaningfully in a bad year — "lower risk" here mostly means lower risk relative to more aggressive, leveraged, or concentrated funds, not low risk in an absolute sense.

Plain-English bottom line: The official rating and how analysts actually talk about this fund line up here, which isn't always the case on this site — about as close to "does what it says on the label" as investing gets. Just remember it's 100% equities with no bonds cushioning it, so "lower risk" is relative, not absolute.

Price trend: Growing

A high yield alone doesn't say whether a fund's price is holding up or quietly being eaten away to help fund the payout — this looks at that separately, using the fund's real price history, not a prediction. Declining doesn't mean the fund is a bad choice; some funds are built to pay out more than they grow, on purpose. It just means part of what you're receiving may be a return of your own money rather than new income.

Est. +11.7%/yr price growth since inception (SI total return 14.52%/yr annualized, 157.89% cumulative, over ~7.0 yrs since Aug 2019 vs. current yield ~2.87%)
